Dental Implants - A Step Forward

What is an Implant?

Dental Implants are titanium cylinders that are surgically placed into the jaw bone to replace missing teeth. They form the root of the tooth over which a Crown /Bridge or Denture can be made. Implants are the safest ,most effective and long lasting choice to replace missing teeth or to stabilize dentures.

Functions of an Implant

Dental implants are changing the way people live! Thanks to this innovation, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh, and enjoy life. They look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that their teeth appear natural and that their facial contours will be preserved.

Implant Procedure

The procedure involves digital preplanning with the help of a CBCT scan and routine blood screening .The surgery involves placing the implant in the jaw bone and covering it up with the gums , followed by a healing period of 3-4 months. The surgery takes 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending upon the number of implants to be placed. In the healing period, we provide you with a temporary prosthesis to fill in the space.
In the next stage, after approximately 3 months, the permanent Crown/Bridge or Denture is made on the implant. All the elements of the tooth like the surface texture, colour and anatomy will be tuned up to blend with the surrounding dentition.

ALL-ON-4

It is a total rehabilitation of edentulous patients, it means all teeth supported on 4 Implants in each jaw. In this procedure, bone grafting can be avoided by utilizing the available jawbone and by tilting the posterior dental implants. This procedure guarantees immediate restoration of function and aesthetics and the patient walks out with teeth in a day.
The final crowns are made after a healing period of 3-4 months .When a tooth is lost, along with eating and speaking difficulties ,bone resorption is also seen. When the jaw does not have enough bone to support the necessary number of implant posts, All on 4 implant system is used.

Process

The computer guided all on 4 dental implant placement is extremely safe, accurate and virtually painless. Further, it allows you to have fixed teeth with a beautiful smile in one day.
A CBCT Scan is done and the data is imported into advance implant placement software to plan and execute exact implant placement. Precise placement of tilted implants and abutments is planned with the help of this software. 3-D model printing of the treatment planning results in a surgical guide. This surgical guide enables the surgeon to execute precise and exact implant placement which makes everything possible in a day. Since so much of time and effort is spent on treatment planning phase, the actual appointment time for implant placement is greatly reduced.

Steps involved in All on 4 Dental Implants processes:

  1. Initial consultation: The function and the fit of patient denture is verified.
  2. Imaging visit: A high-tech CBCT Scan (3-D Scan) is performed to get digital information of the jaw bones.
  3. In laboratory: The information provided by the CBCT Scan is processed by planning software to create a 3-D virtual model of the jaw.
  4. Final office visit:
    • Local anaesthesia is given to numb your tissues
    • A 3-D printed template (surgical template similar to night guard) is placed in mouth.
    • Stabilizing pins hold the surgical guide at correct position in the jaw.
    • Implants are guided into the precise position in the jaw bone by drill sleeves.
    • The teeth are positioned over the implants.
  5. On the way out: The procedure is safe and fast allowing you to have beautiful teeth the same day.
  6. Permanent Crowns are made after 3 to 4 months of healing.

Advantages of All on Four Implants

  • Indicated for patients with poor bone
  • Surgery takes less than 1 hour
  • Highly precise and accurate procedure
  • Minimal swelling
  • Fewer dental visits are required
  • Can be done for both upper and lower jaw in the same day

ALL-ON-6/8

It helps in restoring the arch in the most natural way, it means all 12 -14 teeth supported on 6-8 Implants in each jaw. With the help of advanced scanning, the amount of bone present and the anatomic positioning of dental implants is pre- determined.
All on 6 or all on 8 is the best type of dental implant system for people who have lost all teeth. It provides complete fixed teeth with the most natural appearance. Their advantage is that all the crowns are not joined together in a single piece .Even if 1-2 implants fail, the entire prosthesis is not endangered.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift, also referred to as a sinus augmentation, is performed by an oral surgeon to gently lift the sinus lining and add bone mass to the upper portion of the jaw. This procedure is often necessary for patients who have decided on dental implants, but do not have enough bone mass in the jaw above the molars and premolars to support an implant.
The maxillary sinuses are two hollow cavities located behind the cheekbones and just above the upper molar teeth in the back of the mouth. As people age, the sinuses expand and the jawbone shrinks in size. If upper molars are lost, the bone reduction is even more severe. In more than 50% of these cases, the remaining jawbone lacks sufficient volume to support a dental implant.
There can be many reasons behind the loss of bone in the upper jaw. It could be due to a gum disease or tooth loss. Since more and more people have started opting for dental implants for missing teeth, sinus lifts have become very common. There are three options when it comes to selecting a bone for the sinus lift surgery.

Autogenous Graft

This graft is taken from your own body from areas like hip, tibia or other areas of the jaws.
The major limitation of intraoral autogenous bone is the need of surgical intervention at another site and the limited amount of autogenous bone acquired from the procedure.

Allogenous Graft

These are grafts obtained from cadavers, human donors or bone bank. They carry a risk of transmission of bacterial/ viral infections.

Xenografts

These are grafts whose main component is derived from xenogeneic bone (most commonly used is one from the cow), after chemically treating the organic components. These are very common.
In order to study the anatomy of the patient’s jaw and sinus, dentists do an X-ray or CBCT (3D X-Ray) before the sinus lift surgery takes place. Through the X-ray, the dentist is able to decipher the height or thickness of the bone and accordingly suggest the graft that needs to be used to perform the surgery.
When done by a skilled and experienced surgeon, the success rate for sinus lifts is more than 90%.The patients need to rest after the procedure and give it significant amount of time to heal. If you plan on getting dental implants then it is best to check your sinus health and see if you require a sinus lift.
